From Cairo to the Nile: My Journey Through Egypt’s Ancient Wonders

Some journeys leave you with beautiful photographs. Egypt leaves you with those—and a whole new appreciation for the extraordinary civilizations that came before us.

My trip took me from the energy of Cairo to the beauty of Aswan, followed by a five-star Nile cruise aboard MY Historia. Along the way, I explored ancient temples, stood before the pyramids and the Sphinx, and visited places I had dreamed of seeing for years.

It was a wonderful combination of history, luxury and discovery—and an opportunity to experience firsthand what I can help my clients enjoy on their own Egyptian adventure.

Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza

I began with two nights at Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza, a luxurious base for exploring the city. After busy days of sightseeing, returning to the comfort of the hotel was a pleasure. The accommodations and food were five-star, setting the tone for the journey ahead.

Cairo is lively and full of movement. Staying beside the Nile offered a lovely balance: the excitement of the city during the day and somewhere comfortable to unwind afterward.

The Grand Egyptian Museum

A visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum was one of the highlights of my time in Cairo.

Seeing ancient Egyptian artifacts in person brings a depth to the experience that photographs simply cannot capture. The scale of the larger pieces is impressive, but the smaller details are equally compelling—the craftsmanship, artistry and care that have survived across thousands of years.

One of the highlights was seeing the treasures from King Tutankhamun’s tomb at the Grand Egyptian Museum. The intricate craftsmanship and extraordinary detail made this collection fascinating to explore. Later, visiting his tomb in the Valley of the Kings and seeing his mummy brought the experience full circle—a memorable connection between the young king, his treasures and his final resting place.

It was a fascinating introduction to the history I would encounter throughout the rest of the trip.

The Pyramids and the Sphinx

No matter how many photographs you have seen, standing before the Pyramids of Giza is something else entirely.

Their sheer size is difficult to appreciate until you are there. Looking up at these extraordinary structures, I found myself thinking about the people who designed and built them—and how much they accomplished with the tools available to them.

Seeing the Sphinx alongside the pyramids completed one of those travel moments that stays with you. These familiar landmarks suddenly became real places, with a presence that no picture could quite convey.

Old Cataract Hotel

From Cairo, I flew to Aswan to begin the next part of my journey.

The change of pace was welcome. After Cairo’s bustle, Aswan introduced a different side of Egypt, with the Nile becoming the focus of the experience.

I visited the historic Old Cataract Hotel, a memorable stop for anyone who appreciates beautiful old hotels with a strong sense of place. Its elegant atmosphere and setting made it a lovely addition to my time in Aswan. Adding to its appeal is the hotel’s connection to Agatha Christie, who is said to have written part of Death on the Nile while staying at the Old Cataract, and Winston Churchill spent enough time there to have a suite named after him - a lovely literary link to my own Nile adventure.

Cruising the Nile

I then boarded MY Historia for a five-star cruise along the Nile.

The accommodations and food were excellent, and cruising offered such an enjoyable way to travel between sightseeing stops. Instead of repeatedly packing and changing hotels, I could settle in and let the journey unfold.

Time on board was part of the pleasure. Watching the river scenery pass provided a chance to slow down, reflect on everything I had seen and enjoy the moments between excursions, while soaking in the top deck swimming pool.

For me, that balance was one of the great strengths of the trip: days filled with discovery, followed by the comfort of returning to the ship.

Ancient Temples Along the Way

We stopped along the route to explore ancient temples, each adding another layer to my understanding of Egypt.

The Temple of Karnak in Luxor was particularly memorable. Walking among its towering columns gave me a powerful sense of the scale and ambition of ancient Egyptian architecture. There was so much to take in, from the vast spaces to the details carved into the stone.

The Valley of the Kings was another highlight. Visiting the royal tombs offered a very different experience from the temples above ground, bringing the beliefs, artistry and burial traditions of ancient Egypt into focus.

Descending into Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings was one of the most memorable moments of my trip. After seeing his treasures at the Grand Egyptian Museum, standing before his mummy brought a very personal dimension to the story. Here was the young king himself, in the place created for his burial thousands of years ago.

Together, these visits made the history feel far more immediate than it ever could on a page.
