Exploring Botswana's Wild Heart: My Journey Through the Okavango Delta
As a luxury safari planner and South African native, I believe there is no substitute for firsthand experience when recommending destinations to my clients. That's why I recently traveled to Botswana to explore three remarkable safari camps in some of the country's most pristine wilderness areas: Savute Safari Lodge, Camp Okavango, and Camp Xakanaxa.
This incredible journey took me from the plains of the Savuti region to the waterways of the Okavango Delta, offering a fascinating look at Botswana's diverse landscapes, wildlife, and safari experiences.

Flying Into the Wild: Maun to Savute Safari Lodge
My adventure began in Maun, Botswana's safari gateway. From there, I boarded a small bush plane for a scenic flight to Savute Safari Lodge, located on the edge of the Savuti channel.
The aerial views alone were worth the trip. From above, I watched the landscape transform from dry woodland and open floodplains into a patchwork of wilderness stretching as far as the eye could see, even spotting a few elephants & giraffe from above.
Savute Lodge is perfectly positioned near the Savuti Channel, an area famous for its large elephant populations, lion prides, and predator activity. The camp offers an authentic safari atmosphere with beautifully appointed tented accommodations overlooking a productive waterhole.
One of the highlights of my stay was watching a pride of lion attempt an unsuccessful hunt. The game viewing was exceptional, with opportunities to see elephant, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, and countless bird species.
Into the Okavango Delta: Camp Okavango
Then it was time to board another charter flight bound for Camp Okavango, located deep within the permanent waterways of the Okavango Delta.
The contrast between the two camps was striking. While Savuti is known for its dry-land game drives and predator action, Camp Okavango immerses guests in one of the world's most unique wetland ecosystems.
Situated on Nxaragha Island, Camp Okavango offers a completely different safari perspective. Here, the focus shifts to water-based activities such as mokoro excursions, motorboat safaris, and guided nature walks.
Gliding silently through the Delta channels in a traditional mokoro canoe was one of the most peaceful experiences of the trip. Water lilies, papyrus reeds, and abundant birdlife create a landscape unlike anywhere else in Africa.
The Okavango Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most extraordinary wildlife destinations on Earth. Every turn reveals something new, from red lechwe splashing through the shallows to elephants crossing channels and fish eagles calling overhead.
The Perfect Finale: Camp Xakanaxa
My final destination was Camp Xakanaxa (pronounced Ka-ka-na-ka), located within Botswana's famous Moremi Game Reserve. Often considered one of the finest wildlife viewing areas in Africa, Moremi combines permanent water channels, seasonal floodplains, forests, and open grasslands into one incredibly diverse habitat.
Camp Xakanaxa offers the best of both worlds—land and water-based safari activities. This diversity allows guests to experience a wide range of wildlife encounters throughout their stay.
The game viewing here was outstanding. Moremi's varied habitats support healthy populations of elephants, lions, leopards, wild dogs, hyenas, buffalo, and countless antelope species, plus huge amazing trees.
What impressed me most was the incredible concentration of wildlife combined with the untouched beauty of the landscape. Every game drive felt different, with new sightings and breathtaking scenery around every corner.
Watching the sunset over the Delta after a day of exploration was the perfect way to conclude my Botswana adventure.
Why Botswana Should Be on Every Safari Lover's Bucket List
Botswana remains one of Africa's premier safari destinations thanks to its commitment to low-impact tourism, conservation, and exceptional wildlife experiences.
Unlike many safari destinations, Botswana limits visitor numbers, creating a more exclusive and authentic experience. The result is vast wilderness areas, uncrowded game viewing, and some of the highest-quality safari camps in Africa. Each destination offers something unique.
The Okavango Delta feels wonderfully remote and uncrowded, making it ideal for travelers seeking an exclusive safari experience away from the busier wildlife areas of Africa.
