PACKING TIPS FOR SAFARI
When planning your outfits for safari, keep it simple and don’t pack bright colors!
You only need a few items of clothing since most of the camps wash, dry, and iron your clothes daily:
- Pack khaki, green, beige, neutral colors.
- A bandana or buff for dust.
- 2 long sleeve shirts, 3 t-shirts.
- Underwear and socks.
- 1 pair zip-off pants and 2 pairs of shorts.
- Bathing suit.
- Wind proof warm jacket, gloves, and warm cap.
- Pajamas.
- Flip flops (for wearing around camp).
- Sneakers or walking shoes.
- Good wide brimmed hat.
- Personal toiletries and medication, including malaria tablets if going to a malaria area.
Essential Safari Items:
- Camera and zoom.
- Good quality binoculars.
- Local Bird book.
- Kindle (with books about Africa – see our recommended reading section).
- Journal, so you can make notes along the way.
- Headlamp.
- 2 pairs reading glasses (in case you lose 1).
- 2 pairs sunglasses (for the same reason).
- Cell phone.
- Spare cellphone to buy a local data sim.
- Chargers and cords for phone, kindle plus adaptors.
- Strong insect repellant.
- Metal water bottle (some camps provide them, so you can fill up along the way)
- Goggles – if your eyes are sensitive to dust
- Lightweight carry bag for all the souvenirs you will buy.
Items to leave at home:
“American” style t-shirts with logos; short shorts; clothing that is dark blue or black (attracts tsetse flies!); bright colored clothes as apparently it can startle animals (and other guests).
